The sewing & garment shop was established at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in May of 1999.
The shop produces garments, flat goods and many other various items for adult and youth correctional
facilities, statewide departments and the private sector. Customers include Department of Corrections,
Alaska Marine Highway and Federal divisions. The program has trained over 500 adult offenders in layout,
cutting, sewing, quality control, packaging, shipping and receiving. Offenders learn basic job skills
such as working as a team, being responsible, problem solving, timeliness, etc. Wages earned by offenders
aid in payments for restitution and family & child support. The shop employs 40-50 employees at any
point in time. The program offers quality items at reasonable prices.
