The Combined Hiland Mountain Correctional Center is the State of Alaska's dedicated
facility for housing female prisoners. It is a Multi-Level adult correctional facility located in
Eagle River, Alaska. The institution includes 11 buildings, containing approximately 120,000
square feet of space. It sits on approximately 62.7 acres of land adjacent to Eagle River,
Alaska. It has the capacity for approximately 400 prisoners.
Hiland Mountain Correctional Center provides innovative programs in the areas of
Education, Vocational Training, and Therapeutic Treatment programs. The facility has a
Mental Health unit and a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program. Faith Based
Programs are also offered through the Department of Corrections Chaplaincy Office.
It is especially noteworthy that Hiland Mountain has some programs that are unique within
Alaska DOC. The facility contains Alaska's only Cell-Dog program, called Special Pet
Obedience Training (SPOT), which is a collaborative effort with the Mat-Su Borough
Animal Shelter. We also have the only prison String Orchestra in the United States.
Prisoners also partner with various groups in the community to support the "Give Back Project",
which provides year-round opportunities for offenders to give back to Alaska Communities by
donating gifts and services to help those in need. In addition, each year the Native Culture
Council adopts a village to help during the Christmas Season, and the Inmate Council supports
the Salvation Army Adopt-A-Family program.
All custody levels and classifications of prisoners are housed at this facility, including
sentenced and pretrial felon and misdemeanor offenders. The Hiland Mountain Correctional
Center is a fast paced facility with a variety of daily challenges.
