About the Area
Located on Baranof Island, Sitka is considered Alaska's most beautiful
seaside town. It's past is a unique blend of Tlingit and Russian cultures.
Today, Sitka is the single largest town in the United States with over
4,000 square miles of land that have been incorporated into the city
boundaries and it is the fifth largest city in the state.
Petersburg, often called Alaska's little Norway, is nestled in the heart of the
Tongass National Forest at the north end of the Wrangell Narrows. Petersburg is
truly a working town with canneries processing fresh salmon, halibut and shrimp.
Wrangell, Gateway to the Stikine River, is the Alaska you envision. Wrangell is
a friendly frontier town and the only town in Alaska to have been governed by
three flags and four nations: Tlingit Natives, Russia, British, and the U.S.
Off the beaten path, visitors who come to Wrangell find something special. In the
1800's it was the lure of gold on the Stikine River and a route to the Klondike.
Famous naturalist John Muir staged expeditions out of Wrangell, experiencing and
documenting the surrounding majestic and pristine wilderness.
