About the Area
Juneau, Alaska's Capital City, is located in the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate
rainforest in North America. The town was established in the fall of 1880 by prospectors Joe Juneau
and Richard Harris who were led to gold near Silverbow Basin by Auk Tlingit Indian Chief Kowee.
They staked their first claim on October 4, 1880 and from that day until early in World War II,
Juneau was a gold town, producing 90% of the gold that came from Alaska. Southeast Alaska has been
home to the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Indians for thousands of years. Juneau boasts a rich native
culture that can be experienced through out the town. Juneau's most popular attraction, the magnificent
Mendenhall Glacier is an impressive 100 feet tall, 1.5 miles wide and over 6 miles in length. Located
13 miles from downtown Juneau, it is visited by approximately 300,000 people annually.
