SECURITY
Maintain security within the institution and oversee the health and safety of staff
and prisoners.
Physically patrol and visually inspect units, yards, buildings, prisoners, prisoner
property and clothing, etc, to ensure the welfare, safety and security. Maintain visual
surveillance of grounds by foot and from a rover vehicle.
Perform inspections and searches of physical premises and cells, checking for contraband
and compliance with regulations; investigate and report unusual circumstances. Conduct
pat and/or strip searches of prisoners and visitors.
Observe prisoners directly and indirectly through visual, audio and video monitoring,
checking for unusual or abnormal activity, to ensure the physical safety of prisoners,
staff and the public. Observe and respond to obvious and subtle changes in prisoner
conversation or behavior that might be inappropriate or indicate the potential for
trouble.
Monitor radio transmissions between staff in order to respond immediately to
directions/emergencies, and to call for security support as needed.
Provide escort and provide security for visitors.
Comply with and enforce security procedures for keys, equipment and supplies.
Operate control room, monitoring and accessing gates, cameras, alarms, and video
terminals, operating control panels in response to audio and visual cues and requests
by staff.
PRISONER MANAGEMENT
Enforce institutional rules and Standard Operation Procedures (SOP). Report infraction
orally/written, confronting prisoners who violate rules. Initiate segregation or
disciplinary procedures, and perform enforcement activities in compliance with
Department Policies. Explain rules and procedures of the facility to (individual/group)
prisoners so they understand the expectations and consequences of their behavior.
Receive prisoners into custody, conduct searches, make initial assessment of prisoners
for health, safety and security reasons.
Supervise prisoners to maintain general order in daily activities, work assignments and
programming. Monitor inmate phones, mail and hygiene, etc.
Function as Prisoner Hearing Advisor at Disciplinary and Classification Hearings to ensure
prisoner rights and welfare are safeguarded.
Apply the appropriate level of force in accordance with policies, ranging from verbal
warnings and physical presence through the use of soft and hard restraints and in extreme
cases deadly force.
Direct prisoners to work assignments, meals, recreation and traffic from living unit.
Maintain order and discipline in dormitories, shops, work details, and recreational
activities; report infractions of rules, handle unruly and violent prisoners using minimum
necessary force. Control and direct (individual/group) prisoners movement, in various areas
and/or activities within the facility; use appropriate restraints (handcuffs, leg irons,
etc.).
Obtain and deliver meal trays, clothing, bedding, and supplies to prisoners as necessary.
Perform head counts of prisoners and confirm each inmate's identity when conducting a
facility count. Collect and document random and routine urine samples for testing.
Keep records of activities; dispense medication as directed.
A House Officer (Mod Officer, Quad Officer, etc. depending on what facility the CO I works at)
is required to interact with prisoners in a wide variety of situations, often in circumstances
in which the prisoners significantly outnumber the staff/officers, (30 to 60 prisoners in a
Housing Unit). Prisoners may be hostile and verbally/physically aggressive.
Using computer and paper methods, prepare, process, analyze, and manage information documents
and property pertinent to prisoners, departmental and facility operations. Use a computer to
create, impute and retrieve data. Compile data for necessary written incident and other required
reports.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Stabilize and provide backup in emergency situations for the protection of the public, staff and
prisoners in situations such as aggressive behavior, fights, riots or other disruptive behavior,
escape attempts, fires, accidents and medical emergencies.
Utilize emergency respirator equipment to include gas masks and air supplying respirators.
Be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum (O.C.) and other chemical agents.
Be exposed to EID and other electronic immobilization devices.
