Photos from the File: Alaska's First Jail

The Territorial Court House stood in downtown Juneau at the present location of the State Office Building. It was the site of Alaska’s Federal Jail, and was also the site of the last execution, which occurred in 1950 when Alaska was a territory. The method was hanging. Look for the enclosure ringed by barbed wire. That was the Yard. The building also housed the Federal Marshall’s office.
